The following resources do not require a library card for access. A Rutherford Library card is required for Heritage Hub and HeritageQuest.
Rutherford Historic Narratives – Conceived by the Rutherford Civil Rights Commission in part to mark the 50th anniversary of the Commission’s founding, to tell the story of our hometown — Rutherford, New Jersey — through the stories of our families.
Ellis Island – Search for naturalization information and see the ships which brought your ancestors to the US. Free registration.
Family History Library – Resources from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It offers “the largest collection of free family history, family tree and genealogy records in the world.” Must register (free) to access all web site resources and features.
Old Fulton Postcards – Search old New York State historical newspaper pages. Much more than postcards, this is a wonderful (free!) database of old newspapers, historical photos, and genealogy information for New York.
Stephen Morse – His website provides alternate ways to access information at some genealogy sites such as Ancestry.
Cyndi’s List – A comprehensive site and a good place to start your research.
ROOTSWEB – The “oldest and largest free genealogy site.”
WorldGenWeb Project – A nonprofit, volunteer-based organization dedicated to providing genealogical and historical records and resources for worldwide access.
Bergen County Land Records (Courtesy of the Bergen County Clerk’s Office) – This site contains public documents, including deeds and mortgages, recorded into the Official Records of Bergen County, New Jersey from January 1, 1970 to present.
NATIONAL ARCHIVES provide yet another way to trace your family:
