Ellis Island – Search for naturalization information and see the ships which brought your ancestors to the US. Free registration.
Family History Library – Resources from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It offers “the largest collection of free family history, family tree and genealogy records in the world.” Must register (free) to access all web site resources and features.

Stephen Morse – His website provides alternate ways to access information at some genealogy sites such as Ancestry.
Cyndi’s List – A comprehensive site and a good place to start your research.
ROOTSWEB – The “oldest and largest free genealogy site.”
