Who are the Friends?
The Friends of the Library of Rutherford has provided key funding for a range of programs and services for over 50 years. The Friends currently fund many of the library’s children’s programs, museum passes, and film screenings.

Friends of the Library Activities
Fall Cookie Fundraiser
Join the Friends of the Library of Rutherford for a Fall Cooking Decorating Class at the Rutherford Public Library on October 14, 2026 from 6:00 – 8:00PM. Tickets on sale September 14th.
Attendees will enjoy a class taught by our very own board member, Jennifer Costa. Sweets Chef Jen, as she is known in Rutherford and on Instagram, is an award-winning pastry chef from California. Jennifer has over 20 years of pastry experience working in world-class kitchens from The Waterside Inn in Bray, England to The Lodge at Torrey Pines in San Diego, California to Oceans in New York City. Now that Jennifer calls Rutherford home, she would love to give back by teaching a Royal Icing Cookie Decorating class at her favorite spot, the public library.
During the class you can expect to learn about the different consistencies of royal icing, a recipe to take home for both royal icing and her popular sugar cookie, and a few different techniques to help you wow your friends and family this holiday season!
Each ticket includes a box with 5 cookies to decorate with 4 different colors of icing and light refreshments.
All event proceeds will go to support Rutherford Library programs.
Monthly Movie Screenings
The Friends host a free movie screening on the last Tuesday of every month. Complimentary popcorn will be served. To see upcoming events, please visit our calendar. Upcoming movies are:

September 29 at 6:00pm – The Devil Wears Prada 2 (PG-13)
Kids Movie Matinees
The Friends also hold free moving screenings for families on select Saturday mornings. These events are open to all ages, but children under 9 must attend with an adult. Popcorn will be served. Pajamas, stuffies, and snacks are welcome!

Used Book Sales
The Friends host two sales a year featuring a wide variety of used books. Thank you for supporting our 2025 sales! 2026 dates are as follows:
Spring Sale: 2027 dates to come
Fall Sale: Friday, October 2 (10am-5:30pm); Saturday, October 3 (10am-3:30pm); and Monday, October 5 (10am-5:30pm)

Donation Policy
Book donations are accepted during the 2-week windows listed above, and well as during the first weekend (Thursday-Saturday) of most months. Please click here to view the full schedule. No CDs, VHS, or DVDs. Books must be in good condition and free of stains, odors, tears, etc. We cannot accept textbooks, encyclopedias, or other reference materials.
